The pyrophyliite deposits of North Carolina are intimately related geologically to the Volcanic Slate belt of the Piedmont region. The gen-eral mode of occurrence of the pyrophyllite deposits and their possible origin, as well as the geology of the surrounding areas, have been dis-cussed by Stuckey () and by Broadhurst and Councill ().   Contact the North Carolina Geological Survey for availability at NCGS and ***Do not log this cache until you already sent in the answers, your log will be deleted otherwise without question.*** To log this EarthCache: 1. The most extensive deposits are in the Deep River region of North Carolina, where the compact variety is mined, and in South Carolina and Georgia. Major deposits of pyrophyllite occur within region of Ottosdal, South Africa, where it is mined for the production of a variety of manufactured goods and blocks are quarried and marketed as.   Pyrophyllite is quite abundant but not particularly common. It is found most commonly found in slate, phyllite and some schists. The main deposits are found in China and Carolina in the USA. Other notable occurrences are located in Belgium, Switzerland, Mexico; .

The radiating stellate aggregates that come from Mariposa County, California and North Carolina for example are quite appealing with .

However low-grade regional metamorphism has imparted a slaty cleavage to much of the rock in the region and the name persists. Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published. Read, borrow, and discover more than 3M books for free.
